What it does
- Writes or updates the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) in the ECU
- Ensures correct vehicle identification for diagnostics, immobilizer, and service
- Synchronizes VIN across all relevant control units
When it is required
- After replacing an ECU
- After VIN mismatch detected in diagnostics
- After body or BCM replacement
- When registering a used vehicle with a new ECU
Conditions that must be met
- Correct VIN available and verified
- ECU compatible with vehicle model
- Ignition ON, engine OFF
- Stable battery voltage
- No active ECU fault codes that prevent programming
What happens during the procedure
- Diagnostic tool communicates with the ECU
- VIN is written into memory
- ECU confirms correct VIN storage
- Other linked modules may be synchronized
If VIN writing is not performed
- Fault codes or warnings related to VIN mismatch may appear
- Immobilizer or anti-theft system may not function
- Vehicle may fail official inspections or registration checks
After writing VIN
- Verify VIN in live data and diagnostics
- Confirm no fault codes remain
- Check immobilizer and BCM functionality
