Steering Wheel Angle Sensor Calibration
What it does
- Calibrates the steering wheel angle (SWA) sensor
- Ensures accurate steering input data for ESP, ABS, and traction control systems
- Synchronizes sensor with vehicle control units for stability and safety functions
When it is required
- After SWA sensor replacement
- After steering rack, column, or related ECU replacement
- When ABS/ESP warning lights or fault codes appear
- After collision repairs affecting steering geometry
Conditions that must be met
- Vehicle stationary
- Steering wheel centered
- Ignition ON
- Stable battery voltage
- Diagnostic tool connected
What happens during calibration
- Sensor zero point is detected and stored
- ECU updates steering and stability control algorithms
- Plausibility of sensor signals is verified
If calibration is not performed
- Incorrect ESP/ABS intervention
- Fault codes or warning lights may remain active
- Reduced vehicle stability and handling
After calibration
- Verify sensor values in live data
- Perform a short test drive
- Confirm correct ABS, ESP, and traction control operation
- Clear any remaining fault codes
