Trailer Control Module Initialization
What it does
- Initializes and configures the trailer control module (TCM)
- Ensures correct communication between vehicle and trailer systems
- Activates trailer lights, stability control, and towing functions
When it is required
- After replacing the trailer control module
- After installing towing or trailer hardware
- After battery disconnection or control unit reset
- When trailer warning lights or fault codes appear
Conditions that must be met
- Vehicle stationary
- Ignition ON
- Stable battery voltage
- Trailer connected (if required)
- Diagnostic tool authorized and connected
What happens during initialization
- Module checks vehicle CAN network and sensors
- Stores reference values for:
- Trailer presence detection
- Brake lights and turn signals
- Trailer stability control
- Module communicates with ECU and instrument cluster
If initialization is not performed
- Trailer lights may not function correctly
- Trailer stability control may be disabled
- Warning lights or fault codes may remain active
- Reduced towing safety
After initialization
- Verify trailer lights and indicators
- Test trailer stability and braking functions
- Confirm no trailer control warnings remain
